Helena Schjerfbeck and Sisters in Art

Helene Schjerfbeck and Sisters in Art, the lead exhibition of the Retretti Art Centre’s summer 2010 programme will present a broad overview of the production of Finnish women artists from the first half of the 19th century until the turn of the century.

In addition to Schjerfbeck’s work, the exhibitition will include works by Fanny Churberg and Maria Wiik as well as of such lesser-known artists as Mathilda Rotkirch and Hanna Rönnberg. The exhibition will be curated by Professor Riitta Konttinen.

Helen Schjerfbeck (1862-1946) is the best-known Finnish women artist. From an early age her work attracted considerable attention but was also the object of serious criticism during her lifetime. The free painting style and direct realism of her first large figurative painting, Boy feeding his Younger Sister, painted In Brittany in 1881, led to its being given a contradictory reception. Her promising career as an historical painter was cut off by the widely held view that the subject matter was considered unsuitable for a woman.

Enjoy the Nature

At the heart of Europe´s biggest lake district

The waters of Saimaa that surround the Savonlinna region form Europe´s most extensive lake district, whose diverse and dazzling scenery is beyond comparison. In addition to great stretches of open water there are narrow straits, areas of twisting channels amongst a maze of islands, barren but beautiful rocky islets, shores lined with craggy cliffs, verdant wooded landscapes in the south and the west, and undulating hills in the north and the east.

More information from Nestori and Oskari

You can get more information about the Saimaa ringed seal, about nature in the Saimaa lake district and about various guided and self-guided trips from Nestori, the Saimaa Nature Centre, in Savonlinna and from Oskari, the Linnansaari Visitor Centre, in Rantasalmi.

Heinävesi route

The most beautiful waterway route in Finland

Heinävesi route goes from Kuopio via Heinävesi passing the eastern side of the island Soisalo to Savonlinna. It is called the most beautiful waterway route in Finland and even in the whole world. It has been chosen to one of the most beautiful national landscapes in Finland.

The labyrinthine Heinävesi route goes through Heinävesi and splits it into two parts. It combines Lake Kallavesi in Kuopio and Lake Haukivesi in Savonlinna. The typical landscapes of the route are narrow and twisting waterways, open lakes with many islands and six old lock canals, four of which are on the actual Heinävesi route between Kuopio and Savonlinna. Two other locks are in the vicinity of the Heinävesi route. With m/s Puijo it is possible to travel on this route Kuopio- Heinävesi-Savonlinna during the summer.
