The waters of Saimaa that surround the Savonlinna region form Europe´s most extensive lake district, whose diverse and dazzling scenery is beyond comparison. In addition to great stretches of open water there are narrow straits, areas of twisting channels amongst a maze of islands, barren but beautiful rocky islets, shores lined with craggy cliffs, verdant wooded landscapes in the south and the west, and undulating hills in the north and the east.
